The Sembalun Savanna is a vast, approximately 6-kilometer-long grassland that is one of the iconic sights of the Mount Rinjani hiking trail from Sembalun. It offers both stunning panoramas and physical challenges, including several steep hills known as "hills of regret."
The Sembalun Savanna is located near Sembalun Lawang Village, on the northeastern slopes of Mount Rinjani, with an initial elevation of approximately 1,156 meters above sea level. The hiking trail traverses a vast expanse of savannah, offering open natural scenery with beautiful panoramas of Mount Rinjani and the surrounding mountain ranges. The savanna stretches approximately 6 kilometers until it reaches Post 3, where hikers often rest before continuing on to the steeper and more rugged sections.
One of the main challenges on this trail is passing the so-called "Seven Hills of Regret" or "Hills of Regret." This name stems from the feeling of exhaustion and the seemingly endless uphill climb, making hikers regret having chosen this route. Around seven steep hills challenge your stamina, each offering a false sense of hope for a quick summit, only to be followed by another. Although strenuous and tiring, the natural beauty surrounding this trek is a major source of entertainment for climbers.
Several rest points along the savannah trail provide opportunities to recharge, adjust to the altitude, and enjoy the spectacular views. From here, climbers can see the serene Segara Anak crater lake, the mountain peak, and the green hills below. Sunset and dawn views from Mount Rinjani via the Sembalun trail are renowned for their stunning natural panoramas, including the backdrop of Mount Agung in Bali and the Indian Ocean.
This trail tends to have a gentler incline than the Senaru trail, but the main challenge remains, especially on the hill known as the Hill of Regret. Climbers need to be well-prepared, bring adequate equipment, and be aware of the rapidly changing weather. During the dry season, the savannah trail is very dry and hot, so direct sunlight is quite intense and requires extra protection such as a hat and sunscreen. During the rainy season, the trail can become slippery and dangerous, so climbing must be halted in accordance with national park regulations.
The Sembalun Savannah is an important and exciting part of the Sembalun climb to Mount Rinjani. It offers a combination of exotic natural beauty and physical challenges, including steep, endurance-testing hills. This trail is highly recommended for climbers seeking a trek with captivating open views and a challenging climbing experience.

Another challenging trail you need to get through is here. People name it “The seven hills of regret” means that you’ll be too late to feel regret since you have gone that far and it felt like never ending. You have no choice but keep moving forward. Seriously. There are around seven hills which ascents brutally. Each hill promises you a fake hope of the top. It is pretty much identical but may be sevenfold in distance. You did not count the hills exactly. but it’s kind of many. No worries, you’ll be entertained by the natural charms all the way up the hills. The only obstacle is that you’ll too tired to get your camera ready (DSLR for instance). Truly challenge.
